Have you seen those people who can go from person to person, engage them in conversation with ease, and basically be the life of the party? Perhaps you have seen sales people that can converse with just about any customer, sell dirt to a farmer, and close virtually any deal that is sent their way. This type of person typically exemplifies the traits of what’s commonly known as the social butterfly. That is the social butterfly definition. Could you be that type of personality? Could you have a hidden talent and not even know it?

These 15 traits of the social butterfly are the most common traits that social butterflies have.

The more of these that you can recognize in yourself, the more likely that you have a hidden social butterfly inside yourself just waiting for the encouragement to come out of the cocoon.

1. Extraverted Personality

Social butterflies must be extroverted, because otherwise they would never engage people. They would only let others engage them instead. Being extraverted means that you do not prefer solitary situations or reflecting internally. Instead, an extravert focuses on gathering others toward them through some method. Extraverts tend to be much more outgoing than introverts, whereas introverts tend to be shy.

2. Love Being the Center of Attention

The social butterfly loves being the center of attention. It doesn’t have to be to the extent that the entire world revolves around fulfilling their every need, but it does mean that the social butterfly wants people to have a good time and have it because of them – and be able to remember that. The social butterfly might seek out the tough sales calls to close, because it brings more attention to them when they do. They might host the best house parties that you’ve ever heard of.

3. Get Energy from Being Around Others

Social butterflies love being around people, because they get their physical energy from being around others. The social butterfly gets a great adrenaline rush when they see that others are having a good time because of them. For some, it can be as intoxicating as a drug, and they literally must be around others most of their lives in order to have the craved interactions.

4. Enjoy a Good Party

The social butterfly enjoys a good party. That’s because there are so many elements of the social butterfly that exist at a party. In fact, for some social butterflies, they see life as a continuous party, where they are always mingling, always looking to have a good time, always looking to make contact with new people, and always living life on a certain edge.

5. Want to Be Where the Action Is

Social butterflies really like to be where the action is, because again, that brings the attention toward themselves which is what the social butterfly feasts on. Social butterflies will look for the places with the most action and gravitate there naturally. It could be a tough project or an intervention to help a friend or even just being the moderator between two opposing factions or viewpoints between friends, colleagues, or even businesses. If there is something going on, a social butterfly is bound to be there.

6. Make New Friends Easily

One of the unique aspects about the social butterfly is that they can make friends rather easily. It may only take a few moments with a stranger, a couple of strategic elbow pokes or maybe a pat on the shoulder or the back, and they have managed to form the bond of friendship. Social butterflies view the world as if everyone could be their friend, and they attempt to make that happen. When people do not want to be their friends for whatever reason, the social butterfly may experience emotional pain because of it.

7. Love Working on Projects With Teammates

Social butterflies simply hate to work alone. They would rather quit their job than have to work independently on a routine basis. For stay at home parents who are social butterflies, this exhibits itself in different ways, from having daily outings at the park hoping to meet new people to working a second job, even if it only pays for daycare, because they can’t stand to not be around others. Social butterflies, when forced to work independently, typically produce a lower overall work quality than if they are working with a team, because their focus is more toward getting back into the company of others and less toward what the project happens to be.

8. Home Is a Reflection of Others

The social butterfly is a collector of things. When one is the life of the party, is around others much of their lives, and is making new friends at every possible opportunity, their home or room reflects these things. Whereas the non-social butterfly will hang up their own artwork, for example, the social butterfly will hang up the works that others have given them.

9. Spontaneous Decisions Occur Often

One thing about social butterflies that can drive others simply batty is that they are often extremely spontaneous. Forget having a vacation itinerary. Give the social butterfly a plane ticket or the gas money and send them on their way, and they’ll have a brilliantly good time. This occurs in every aspect of life, as well. The social butterfly might decide that they want to go get ice cream this very moment, and they do so. They may want to go try an expensive fine dining establishment despite the fact that they don’t have much grocery money, and they’re likely do it anyway.

10. A Bold Wardrobe

The social butterfly is all about expression, and this comes through, especially in a wardrobe. The clothes of the social butterfly are best described as being bold, colorful, and designed to bring attention to the person wearing them. It’s not about generating a negative reaction in order to get attention by wearing something offensive. Rather it is about being bold and confident enough to wear something that almost no one else would feel like being caught dead in.

11. Upbeat Music That Makes You Want to Dance

The social butterfly loves to be around others who are having a good time, and a lot of people don’t have a good time being around dark, moody music that makes people contemplate. Instead, they want upbeat, bright, and rhythm enhanced music that makes people want to tap their foot, get out on the dance floor, or at the very least bob their head just a little.

12. Put Candy on Their Desk

If you work in an office setting, you can tell who the social butterflies are immediately, because, without exception, they have some sort of candy on their desk or a popular snack that other people are going to like which will make them want to stop over at the social butterfly’s desk for a quick conversation. It doesn’t matter that it can be at an extreme personal cost to the social butterfly, because there is a great reward in having consistent conversation throughout the day, especially if the social butterfly is forced to work by themselves a lot.

13. Leave the Door Open… Everywhere

The social butterfly is all about invitations, and there isn’t a greater invitation in the world than an open door. That’s why when there is an unsecured open door at a home, people often call the police, because it is inviting to go in there and take something. On the same thought pattern, an open office door is an invitation to go in and have a conversation, and that’s exactly what the social butterfly wants.

14. Have to Facebook & Tweet When Alone

Even the best of social butterflies are unable to be around other people all of the time. For those moments when the social butterfly is stuck at home, you can find them interacting online with people through social networking applications like Facebook and Twitter. Social interactions over the internet obviously aren’t quite the same thing as face to face, but they work in a pinch. For some that means social gaming, for others that means chatting, but whatever the case, the social networks online are still the realm of the social butterflies.

15. Actually Enjoy Politics!

The last overwhelming indicator of the social butterfly is that they enjoy the sport of politics. They enjoy the conversation, the banter, and even the arguing when it comes to the debate of specific topics and issues; in fact, they thrive on it.

Being a social butterfly is not for everyone, but if you are wondering how to be a social butterfly, or if you might have what it takes to be a social butterfly, then apply these traits to your life and see if there is a fit. If there is, then congratulations! You’re a social butterfly too.
